Driver Ed Classroom
When is my teen allowed to take driver education in NH?
All students must be 15 years and 9 months old on the first day of class, no exceptions.
Do I need a permit or temporary license to start driver education class?
No, in the State of NH anyone over 15 1/2 years of age may drive with a licensed driver over the age of 25 in the passenger seat. You will need 40 hours logged behind the wheel outside of drivers ed to obtain your license. To start driver ed, you need to be 15 years and 9 months old on the first day of class.
How long does it take to complete driver ed?
Per NH law, all students under the age of 18 are required to complete 30 hours of classroom instruction, 10 hours of drive time instruction, and 6 hours of observation to obtain the driver education certificate. I have the courses set up to finish most courses in approximately 7 1/2 weeks, (meeting 2x/week) which is an appropriate time to complete. I will also offer a 5-week summer course once a year, which is a condensed course that will meet 3x/week.
What happens if I miss a classroom period class?
All students MUST attend the first day of class. Per NH law, students cannot have more than 2 excused absences (2 classes) during their session. Any missed class will need a signed note from their parent and a 500 word essay on each chapter missed. More than 2 classes missed will require the student to retake the session.
Policies
What is your refund policy?
All deposits are non-refundable, and no refunds are given once the course/session has started. If you register for a class in the future and need to change it before the class begins, you will be given one opportunity to re-schedule for another future class.
Behind-the-Wheel Lessons
When can I start behind-the-wheel lessons?
You may start behind the wheel lessons with us as soon as your classroom starts. After the first class, we will post open drive times on the website and students may start scheduling them weekly.
Will you offer home pickup and drop off?
We will offer a hybrid style for pick up and drop off. This means some drive times will start and finish at the Deerfield office, some at your home, and some at your high school. It all depends upon where you and your observing driver are located and our schedule, so please respect this and we will do the best we can to accomodate.
What type of car does your company have for behind-the-wheel lessons?
We have a 2022 Toyota RAV4 SE, which is a fantastic all-wheel drive vehicle. It has the instructor brake on the passenger side and meets all SAF-C 3100 criteria for driver education in NH.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my driving lesson?
You may do so if you text, call, or email me within 24 hours of your drive time. If not, it's a $75 rescheduling fee.
Will I have the same instructor every week?
Yes, one of the benefits of Safety First Driver Education is consistent instruction. You will have the owner Craig Thomas as your classroom and driver instructor every week. Craig has vast experience and tallied up over 1500 hours behind the wheel and 150 hours of classroom instruction from March 2021-22.
Will I have other students in the car with me?
In most cases, you will have one other student observing during your drive time. Each student needs a total of 6 observation hours during the course, so this will vary as the course goes on.
How long can I drive with an instructor?
Each behind-the-wheel drive time is set for one hour per student. Once the student has completed six hours of drive time, they are allowed to schedule a two-hour drive.
